Rome, Italy Day 1

March 31, 2010

It's been a while since I've written anything for the blog.  It's about time!

Today starts our insane journey, visiting the Western countries of Europe.  Proper English grammar may be lacking due to my constant use of Polish in the last few months, so I apologize if something isn't clear.

Our journey begins in Italy!  I have been waiting eagerly to visit this country and can't believe the time has finally come!  Today started off with me waking up an hour early because I had reset my iPod touch (my alarm) to be an hour ahead (not realizing that it accounts for daylight savings time on its own), but luckily I figured it out when I realized that Trevor was not getting up (even though I know he had planned to be up earlier than me).  So, I got an extra hour of sleep (yippee!)  When Trevor woke up, he double checked where our hotel was and realized I had made a major error and booked us in a hotel that wasn't in Rome, but rather on the outskirts.  After calling expedia and trying to finangle our way out of it, we figured we'd deal with it when we got to Rome, and off we went.  The flight was uneventful, though we got really good seats (first row after 1st class, so lots of leg room), and by 15:30 we were at the Leonardo DaVinci Airport (or Fiumicino).  We took the train into Monterotondo (where our hotel was booked).  Once at the station, we realized we had no idea where we were going.  At first we had no GPS, so we really had nothing to work with, but luckily the satellites kicked in and we realized we were a ridiculous distance away!  Now what?  I encouraged Trevor to walk (not very usual, but good practice for a later leg of our Italian adventure).  We walked all the way to our hotel which, as I look it up now, was a 3.4km walk.  Now that I write it, it doesn't seem bad, but when you factor in the not knowing, the fact that we had our bags on our backs, it was uphill most of the way and the fact that there were no sidewalks, it was definitely difficult.  It was good to see the small town though.  The views at the top of the hill were awesome!  It was an interesting way to see Monterotondo.  We finally got to our hotel.  Our hotel guy told us all about how to get to Rome tomorrow, and then we headed for dinner.  It was awesome having Italian food in Italy!  Nothing special, pizza and pasta carbonara with Chardonnay and then tiramisu (that was amazing) for dessert.  It was a great way to end the day.  So for a day that we didn't do much sight seeing, I definitely had a few words to say about it.  Tomorrow, we're off to visit Rome.  When in Rome…
