Hello from North Dakota

August 31, 2009

Hi Everyone!

First leg of our trip is done. We made it into Winnipeg at 1:30p on Saturday Aug 29. Just outside of Edmonton we decided to visit the big pysanka. We drove into the night Friday and stayed in a cute little recreation area outside Saskatoon. We then woke up at 6a Edmonton time and drove pretty much straight to Winnipeg. We did stop in a little town called Mennidosa where we stood in a 15 car line up outside a gas station. Once we got to the front we found out the reason it was a 15 car line up was because they had been giving away free gas but they were out by the time we had got to the front. Just outside Winnipeg we took pictures next to an incredible field of sunflowers! It was like out of a movie. Just incredible. And then there was Winnipeg. We started out at Stan and Paula’s with a shower and clean clothes and some very excited boys. After some discussion as to what the plan was, we decided to head to the Oasis, Auntie Judy’s and Uncle Gord’s and Auntie Loreen’s cabin. It was chilly, but nice when we were out in the sun. The boys taught us about frog catching at the Oasis. We ended up with over 30 frogs in a bucket! It was quite the gathering at the Oasis. Judy, Gord, Loreen, Sandy, Herman, Stan, Paula, Kieran, McKinnley, Kara, Brian, Cathy, Riel, and us. It was fun. The next day we went to the forks and met up with Elizabeth and Cathy and saw the 2 most important things according to McKinnley: the skate park and Sugar Mountain (a candy store). We then had another gathering back at Stan and Paula’s and this time saw Kristin, Richard and Chelsea. After that gathering we met up with Sarah and Billy for gelati. It was a great day. This morning we had a pretty sweet farwell from Kieran, McKinnley and Auntie Loreen. We are now off to the biggest ball of twine in Minnesota which is in Darwin and then as close to Chicago as we can go.

We just went across the border and got searched. They pulled out my purse contents and then made Trevor and I sit in a little room with a two way window (where we couldn’t see our car) and they searched the car. I guess they found Trevor’s American passport and the lady told us that Trevor should use it next time instead of his Canadian. They were much nicer to us after that. They let us go no problem. We’re now at a rest stop in North Dakota just outside Grand Forks.

I hope everyone is doing well.

Miss you all!
